The Quarto Group is seeking a talented Art Director to oversee the design direction for all Publishing and Custom products and internal design materials, ensuring graphic excellence, accuracy, and adherence to budget requirements of assigned books and their accompanying illustrations and photography. The Art Director works closely and collaboratively with the Publishers/Editorial Director on design direction and program aesthetic and manages in-house production designer(s). This position is located in our brand new SoCal office location! Are you the right person for this incredible opportunity? The key responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:
-Oversee cover design, interior design (sample spreads or BLADs), and page layout.
-Hire and supervise freelance cover designers, page designers, and production artists.
-Ensure projects comply with company standards for budget, schedule, and quality.
-Work within established schedules to ensure projects deliver on deadline.
-Oversee and/or actively direct photography both in studio and on location as needed.
-Gather project materials for delivery to freelance layout artists.
-Supervise final review changes to photo, illustration, and layout files.
-Prepare files for project transmittals to Production.
-Partner with publishers, editors, and design managers in launch meetings for new titles.
-Manages preparation of files for transmittal to freelance designers or production.
Do you have the following skills and qualifications?
-Broad understanding of current book production technology and procedures.
-Demonstrated expertise with relevant computer software including (but not exclusive to): Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Bridge) Suitcase Fusion, Flightcheck, Genuine Fractals, Quark Xpress, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
-Ability to identify/evaluate successful cover and interior book design.
-Knowledge of digital photography.
-Understanding of page layout grids and templates.
-Organized and methodical work habits.
-Ability to take direction and complete tasks quickly.
-Four-year degree from an accredited college, with a major in design, art, or related subject.
-Minimum three years' experience in print publishing field, preferably book publishing.
-Strong portfolio demonstrating page and cover design abilities.
