Lincoln Children’s Books to publish Grandad Mandela, the first ever children’s book about Nelson Mandela created in collaboration with his family

13 Oct 2017

The book will publish in July 2018 on what would have been Nelson Mandela's 100th birthday and will tie in with the global campaign that the Mandela family have planned to promote the centenary.

It will be illustrated by Sean Qualls, the Coretta Scott King award-winning illustrator of Before John Was a Jazz Giant.

In this book, two great-grandchildren (aged 7 and 6) have asked their grandmother 15 questions about the man they remember as Grandad and the world remembers as Nelson Mandela. They learn that he was a freedom fighter, a President and a Nobel Peace Prize-winner, and that they can continue his legacy in the world today. Seen through a child's perspective, and authored jointly by Zazi Mandela, Ziwelene Mandela and Ambassador Zindzi Mandela, this amazing story will be told as never before.

It has been described as ‘the only book of its kind' by the Mandela family, as it is the only book for children about Nelson Mandela that has been created and endorsed by them.

Rights were acquired by Commissioning Editor Katie Cotton from Mandela Legacy Media Proprietory Limited. Qualls was represented by Holly McGhee of NY based Pippin Properties.

Rachel Williams, Publisher at Lincoln Children's Books, said: "Mandela's message of love's triumph over hate has never been more relevant. We're honoured to be working with his family to publish this historic book."

Lincoln Children's Books has a 40-year history of publishing books on diversity and freedom. Its award-winning We Are All Born Free, Dreams of Freedom and Imagine – all published in partnership with Amnesty International – have sold in 30+ languages worldwide.
