Born in London, little Julia grew up in an old Victorian house surrounded by her family. As a child she loved writing stories, reading and performing to audiences big and small. She also loved making up her very own songs. 

After university, Julia tried out lots of different jobs from teaching in schools, working on the radio and even creating songs for television shows, but nothing quite stuck. When someone suggested she transform one of her songs into a children’s book, Julia knew she had found her place as an author. A few years later, her very first book, A Squash and a Squeeze found its way into the homes and hearts of children everywhere. 

Julia went on to create some of the most beloved characters of all time, from the Gruffalo to Stick Man. Her melodic stories are filled with magic and adventure, kindness and acceptance. Throughout her career Julia has won awards, written stories for older children, worked with countless illustrators, become the Children’s Laureate, been awarded the CBE for services to literature and has even had her stories transformed into short films.
