Quarto Publishing Group is seeking an Acquiring Editor to join our creative publishing team. The ideal candidate will identify emerging marketable trends and potential authors in the illustrated-nonfiction space to create book concepts and write proposals based on these findings for a minimum of 12 projects per year for our Motorbooks imprint. They will champion their projects through all phases of the publishing process and will be expected to work collaboratively with the editorial, design, production, sales, and marketing teams.

This role is primarily working closely with the editorial director to develop acquisitions proposals for the Motorbooks list and will be responsible for commissioning titles that reflect current trends and interests of our core audiences in the subject areas of automobiles, motorcycles, motorsport, aerospace, and music. This position will sit in our Beverly, MA office on a hybrid schedule. The right remote candidates will be considered.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and acquire proposals for timely, on-trend titles with skilled and well-positioned authors and present them at regular acquisitions meetings.
  • Acquire 12-16 titles with respect to revenue goals.
  • Perform necessary research to remain abreast of trends and competitors’ releases and acquisitions in subject categories of responsibility.
  • Develop P&Ls for title acquisitions and negotiate contracts with authors, agents, and content providers.
  • Work closely with authors to develop the content, style, and approach of each title.
  • Coach authors and other contributors during content creation to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Evaluate authors’ manuscripts and artwork or photography for quality, voice, consistency, and market appropriateness.
  • Oversee projects through all stages of editorial, design, and production and coordinate the process with the authors.
  • Work closely with art directors to provide information and content needed to create forward-thinking, market- and audience-appropriate book covers and page layouts.
  • Work closely with Sales and Marketing to ensure strategic planning and scheduling of new books.
  • Write engaging and audience-appropriate marketing materials including title metadata, jacket copy, and outward-facing book marketing descriptions.
  • Throughout the life of books or other products, act as content expert and author delegate to help shape marketing plans and sales strategies.
  • Brainstorm PR ideas and opportunities with the marketing and sales team that reflect the unique subject matter or unique author platform.
  • Participate in sales presentations and meetings to educate sales and marketing colleagues about forthcoming titles.

Minimum Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, or related discipline; or proven publishing experience.
  • Three years of experience in acquisitions or content development.
  • Skill in Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent writing, editing, grammatical, and communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of book publishing and imprint subjects.
  • Knowledge of the book-publishing process.
  • Ability to analyze trends to determine longevity and validity of book topics.
  • Capacity to work independently and as a team player in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Diplomacy and good judgment

Desired

  • Experience developing content related to automotive, motorcycle, motorsport, and aerospace subjects and a conversant interest in music.
  • Familiarity with social networking and subject-related blogs.
  • Experience with publishing industry and social media analytical tools.
